Honoring Veterans: The Power of Listening to Their Stories

Veterans Day is a moment to pause and recognize the men and women who have served in the armed forces—individuals who stepped forward with courage, discipline, and devotion to something larger than themselves. Their service has shaped our communities, our families, and the course of our nation’s history.

Honor, however, is not just a word we say; it is an action we take. One of the most meaningful ways to honor veterans is by listening to their stories.

For me, this day is personal. My brother, Kevin Thornton, Jr (1980-2015), was a United States Marine who proudly served his country. Watching his dedication and pride in wearing that uniform deeply influenced me. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a Marine myself, and I also had plans to attend the Air Force Academy. I’ve always carried a profound respect for the military and a strong desire to serve, protect, and defend our country. Those values have stayed with me throughout my life.

Though my path ultimately led me into the world of writing and publishing, that respect for service never faded. Today, I am grateful that through Create and Blossom, we have been able to help many veterans tell their stories—stories of courage, transition, healing, leadership, and legacy. Their books and testimonies have changed lives, strengthened families, and reminded communities of the strength that lives within those who serve.

Every veteran’s story is different. Some share memories of camaraderie and lifelong friendships. Others carry experiences of hardship, sacrifice, and loss. Some stories are joyful; others, heavy. But each one holds history. Each one carries perspective. Each one reminds us that our freedoms did not appear by accident—they were preserved by real people with real lives and real families.

Listening is a form of respect. When we listen, we acknowledge the value of a person’s journey. We allow space for voices that deserve to be heard.

Here are three meaningful ways to listen with care:

  1. Create a calm, unhurried space. Give your full attention. Put away distractions and allow room for comfort and presence.
  2. Listen without interrupting or trying to “fix” the story. Allow pauses. Let their words unfold at their pace.
  3. Honor their boundaries. If a veteran chooses not to share certain parts, respect that. Let them lead the conversation.

Today, if you know a veteran—reach out. Ask how they’re doing. Invite them to share, if they’re willing. Simply be present. You don’t need perfect words or the right response; patience and compassion are enough.

Veterans Day reminds us that gratitude should be ongoing, not reserved for one date on the calendar. Let today inspire us to continue listening, learning, and supporting those who have served.

To every veteran—thank you. Your service matters. Your story matters.
