Behind the Scenes: What It’s Really Like Working With a News Reporter on Your Book Story

One of the most exciting milestones in an author’s journey is seeing your story come to life beyond the pages of your book—and recently, we had the honor of experiencing just that.

Create and Blossom had the absolute pleasure of working with Dominique Leh, a neighborhood reporter with KXXV Channel 25 News, and I can confidently say the experience exceeded every expectation.

From the moment Dominique arrived, she immediately set the tone. She greeted us warmly and jumped right into familiarizing herself with the book we would be discussing during the interview. Watching her take time to truly understand the story before the cameras even started rolling was incredibly refreshing. It was clear from the beginning that she wasn’t just covering a story—she was preparing to tell it well.

My role that day was behind the scenes. I was there to capture footage, document the process, and support Mr. Terry Aslin as he prepared to share his story on camera. Since the segment was not airing live and would be broadcast the following day, there was room to breathe, reflect, and thoughtfully shape the conversation. That extra space made all the difference.

Dominique asked powerful, intentional questions—ones that went far beyond surface-level promotion. She explored how the story originated, what it was like to create the book while walking through such a deeply personal and recent loss, and how honoring his late wife through this project shaped every part of the process. Some moments were emotional, and Dominique handled them with incredible care, patience, and respect. She allowed the story to unfold naturally, never rushing the conversation, and gave space for honesty and reflection.

That level of storytelling is rare—and impactful.

This interview beautifully captures the heart behind the book, the purpose behind its creation, and the resilience woven into every page. It’s a story that will undoubtedly inspire children, parents, and anyone who understands the power of turning pain into purpose.

For authors preparing for interviews of their own, experiences like this offer valuable lessons. Here are three key tips to keep in mind when stepping in front of the camera to share your story:

Top 3 Tips for Preparing for a Book Interview

1. Know Your Story Beyond the Pages
Reporters aren’t just interested in what your book is about—they want to understand why it exists. Be prepared to speak about the heart behind the story, what inspired it, and what you hope readers take away. The more connected you are to your “why,” the more natural and compelling your responses will be.

2. Allow Yourself to Be Human
Interviews don’t require perfection. In fact, some of the most powerful moments come from authenticity. If your story is emotional, it’s okay to pause, reflect, or show vulnerability. A great reporter will give you the space to share honestly, and those moments often resonate most with viewers.

3. Trust the Process—and the Storyteller
Once the interview begins, take a deep breath and trust both the preparation you’ve done and the reporter telling your story. Experienced journalists know how to guide the conversation and highlight what matters most. Staying present allows the story to unfold naturally and creates a more impactful segment.

Dominique Leh is an exceptional storyteller, and Mr. Aslin’s journey is one that deserves to be shared far and wide. We are incredibly grateful for this experience and highly recommend watching the full feature.
