As authors, our influence stretches far beyond the pages of our books. Staying relevant in the community isn’t just about promoting your latest release—it’s about being seen, being known, and being remembered.
Because I’m a local publisher and author in Waco, Texas, I’ve learned how important it is to maintain a strong presence where community members not only know about the services I provide but also recognize me as an active part of the local creative scene.
One of the main ways I stay relevant is through media engagement. I make it a priority to schedule podcast interviews and media appearances so people can stay up to date with what’s new—whether it’s a recent book release or an upcoming event. These moments in the spotlight help keep my name and brand fresh in the minds of readers, clients, and community members.
Another key to staying relevant is showing up locally. I make it a point to stay current with events happening around town. Whether it’s a festival, networking mixer, or community book fair, being present in the community gives people a chance to connect a face to your name. Since moving to Waco almost ten years ago, I’ve made it my mission to be visible—and it’s paid off. Around town, people know me as “the book lady.” They’ve seen me on local news segments, at speaking events, and at book fairs. That recognition didn’t happen overnight—it came from consistent visibility and community involvement.
But relevancy isn’t always about trying to make a sale. Yes, as authors we are ultimately selling a product, but our deeper mission goes beyond transactions. We are here to impact lives—to share messages that help others grow, heal, or advance, whether personally or professionally. Our words matter, and the message behind them is what truly builds lasting relevance.
Many authors strive to use their voices in impactful ways—to become voices that their communities can trust. People trust us enough to buy our books, even if it’s simply for entertainment or storytelling, but that trust also extends to believing that we have something meaningful to say. When readers know your heart and message, they begin to see you as more than an author—they see you as an influencer, a thought leader, and a trusted voice.
Social media consistency is another powerful tool for staying relevant. I frequently share updates about my work—whether it’s a podcast appearance, a new author collaboration, or a speaking engagement. Even small posts and graphics can make a big difference in reminding people what I do and keeping my brand active online.
Relevancy matters because it builds trust, awareness, and connection. The more visible you are, the more likely people are to remember your name when they need your services or when they’re looking for a good book to read. Staying present—both online and in person—keeps you at the top of mind and helps you build lasting relationships with your audience.
So, if you’re an author looking to make an impact, remember: your community is your stage. Step out, show up, and let people see the story behind the books you write.
