Writer’s block is what every writer dreads. Writing is meant to bring us joy and excitement. We’re meant to be passionate about it. And passion should allow their words to flow like a river, right? If this is true, why do writers sometimes feel like they are running into brick walls? Unfortunately, even though we are passionate about something, we’re still human, and we will always run into obstacles. We can, however, ensure that we do not stay in a rut by trying out exercises that can help us get unstuck.
Sometimes we may face writer’s block because of the specific section we are writing. Being burnt out on a plot-point is common. Sometimes we don’t feel inspired to put our all into an action scene or a pivotal plot twist. Moving onto another section can help us gain back our passion and motivation to write. A change of pace helps us clear our minds before we dive back into the part that was giving us trouble. It’s okay to jump around in our work because it can be beneficial for us.
Another idea to help with writer’s block is to put down your current work and write for fun. Writing without a purpose allows your brain to flow with ideas because we are not forcing it to work overtime to ensure that our writing is perfect and presentable. Journaling about your day can divert your attention to another project so that when you do eventually go back to your previous writing, you will be able to come back with a clear mind and fresh ideas. Just write anything down and you’re on your way to overcoming your writer’s block as you will inevitably inspire yourself through your own writing prowess.
Reading is typically my go-to when I have writer’s block. I always go back to my favorite novels and my favorite scenes, and every idea I’ve ever had comes back ten-fold. Even watching movies can help with your writer’s block; there will always be a scene that is so powerful that it will make you want to write something with the same impact. With every movie I watch, I always think about how I would have had it play out, and this in turn inspires me to write and create a scene I would want to see.
Most importantly, you should always allow yourself to have a break. Free your mind. You shouldn’t force your brain to work overtime to form ideas when you feel uninspired. You’re just going to burn yourself out. Take a break and experience life. Go out for a walk; go to the park and people watch. There will never be a time where you won’t experience something that will inspire you to write again. The world offers so much, and we should take advantage of it. It is almost guaranteed that something will spark an idea after seeing how beautifully amazing the world around you is.
