Make sure your story has a clear message or takeaway.

One of the first things I realized about storytelling is the importance of identifying the core lesson before starting the writing process. It’s crucial to ask, “What is the main idea?” and understand the lesson I want my audience to take away. This is true even in fiction. Starting with a summary that conveys the essential message, whether in a romantic story, a suspenseful tale, or one’s personal chronicle, is crucial.

I just started working on my new memoir, and my writing mentor and good friend hit me with this question right off the bat: “What’s the big lesson you want to convey? Why are you telling your story?”

Although writing can be like therapy, authors who want to share their work with the world usually have something big to say — whether it’s about politics, spirituality, inspiration, love, gripping stories, or pushing boundaries. And the possibilities are endless!

Crafting a compelling story with a clear message or takeaway is essential for engaging your audience and leaving a lasting impact. To ensure your narrative resonates with readers, start by defining the main theme or lesson you want to convey. This central message will serve as the foundation for your story, guiding the plot and character development.

Next, focus on developing strong and relatable characters that embody the message you aim to communicate. By creating well-rounded characters with believable motivations and emotions, you can effectively convey your story’s central theme through their actions and experiences. Make sure your characters face challenges and conflicts that highlight the message you want to convey, allowing readers to connect with the story on a deeper level.

Once you have established the central message of your story, it’s time to weave it seamlessly throughout the narrative. Introduce relatable characters that embody the values or struggles connected to your message. Their arcs should reflect the evolution of the central theme, allowing readers to connect emotionally and intellectually to the storyline.

In crafting a story that is both captivating and meaningful, you have the opportunity to inspire, provoke thought, and spark conversations that endure beyond the final page. Approach each element of your narrative with intention and creativity, and watch as your story unfolds into a tapestry of emotions and ideas that captivate your audience.

Pay attention to the structure and pacing of your story to ensure that the message or takeaway is clearly communicated to the audience. Consider the climax and resolution of your narrative, making sure they reinforce the central theme and leave a lasting impression on the reader. By following these steps and staying true to your message, you can craft a story that not only entertains but also inspires and enlightens your audience.
