The importance of research in writing

I will never forget the mini panic attack I experienced when I decided to write my first memoir, Once Upon a Child. I was overwhelmed with anxiety because I was determined to ensure that I shared accurate information about the reality of experiencing miscarriages. I firmly believed that my story held great significance and had the power to inspire readers, yet I also felt a strong desire to educate those who were curious about this traumatic experience, particularly individuals who had not personally endured the loss of a child.

The thing is, the numbers are pretty wild, and because of that, even folks who haven’t been through it themselves know someone who has. And while they might not understand the pain firsthand, it’s surprising how many of them want to know how to support and comfort those in their communities who have lost babies.

I totally knew that doing proper research would be super important for this book. Like, seriously, research is a big deal when it comes to telling your story, especially in a memoir. So, I thought, why not do some research and chat with my OBGYN who ended up writing the foreword for my book.

Researching is super important when you’re writing, no matter what you’re writing about. It’s basically the backbone of any piece of writing. To write something awesome, you’ve gotta gather info from all over the place – books, articles, websites, even talking to people, you name it!

One of the primary benefits of research is that it provides the writer with a wealth of knowledge and ideas. Through research, writers can gain a deeper understanding of their topic and identify key points to include in their writing. Additionally, research allows the writer to support their arguments and claims with factual evidence, making their writing more convincing and credible.

Another advantage of research is that it allows the writer to tailor their writing to a specific audience. By understanding their readers’ needs and interests, the writer can create a piece that is engaging and relevant. Research can also help the writer identify gaps in the existing literature, providing an opportunity for them to contribute new ideas and perspectives to the conversation.

Research is super important when you’re writing. It helps you really get what you’re talking about, back up your points with facts, and make sure you’re speaking your readers’ language. So whether you’re working on a research paper, a story, or a blog post, doing your homework will make your writing so much better in the end.
