Why you should finish your book right now

I used to work in higher education before I got into book publishing. I really enjoyed my job because I could keep using my passion for helping people advance in their careers. It was so rewarding. While I was there, I worked with this amazing guy who was always super nice and had the biggest smile. I remember walking past his cubicle so many times to grab coffee or meet with a colleague, and every single time I saw him, he was smiling or laughing. His laugh was so infectious. When he laughed, you just had to join in. Let’s call him John.

Years after I left the old school and kicked off my own publishing gig, I got a call from John asking for my help with his book. I was totally shocked, but super hyped to hear all about his project. Turns out, he was the first client who didn’t want to go with a big self-publishing company and preferred working directly with me. I felt so honored and thankful for the chance. We talked about his book project, which I was totally into, and then he dropped the bomb about why he needed to finish the book ASAP. “Kennisha, I’ve got stage four pancreatic cancer. I knew I had to get this book done, but I want to do it before it’s too late.”

I was speechless.

I was heartbroken.

I was deeply saddened by his experience, but I also fully grasped the task at hand. It was crucial to assist him in completing and making his book available, and time was of the essence.

I witnessed his body gradually weaken, but his strength and determination to see his project through were truly remarkable. He made an effort to meet me whenever he could. In fact, the last time I saw him was when I gave him a copy of this book, a moment I will never forget.

He held it, hugged me, and thanked me.

I was deeply moved, holding back tears as I realized it might be the final time I’d lay eyes on him. It brought me immense relief to have been able to assist him in sharing this poignant message with the world—a message he fervently believed would inspire and uplift others.

I had a final conversation with John over the phone. As he whispered his thanks for one last time, I gently responded, “It was my pleasure.” I felt deeply honored by our exchange. In the days following that call, his wife informed me of his passing.

Sometimes, we believe that there is an abundance of time to fulfill our aspirations, carry out our responsibilities, and make a difference. However, the reality is that time is transient, and often, we fail to utilize it effectively. It’s essential to seize the opportunity while we are in good health and capable, to pursue our dreams and serve as a source of inspiration and support for others.

“If you carry a story within you, let it burst forth with the fire of your passion, seizing this moment to express it in your distinctive, unparalleled voice.”Kennisha

Have a wonderful week!
